GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT BROWN UNIVERSITY
Research Emphasis: My research focuses on major patterns and controls of ecosystem evolution, from intrinsic evolution of key innovations within biological taxa to extrinsic forcing of climatic controls driven by celestial mechanics and giant environmental catastrophes. I emphasize field-based data collection and have on-going projects in cyclical lacustrine deposits in the Devonian of Scotland, Mississippian of New Brunswick, Canada, Triassic-Jurassic of eastern North America, Morocco, and China, and the Eocene of the Western, US. My approach tends to integrate a variety of techniques including stable isotope geochemistry, palynology, time series analysis, and organismal morphology to understand ecosystem to biosphere level processes. However, I also place importance on relevant natural history such as the discovery and description of new taxa as well as phylogenetic and symbiotic relationships among organisms. |
