GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT BROWN UNIVERSITY The faculty in this research group are internationally recognized for research on the nature of silicate melts (Professor Paul C. Hess), the pressure, temperature and time histories of metamorphic and igneous rocks (Professors L. Peter Gromet, Malcolm J. Rutherford, and Alberto E. Saal), and kinetics and mechanisms of transport processes in minerals and melts (Professors Emeritus Bruno Giletti and Richard Yund, Professor Yan Liang). Professor Reid F. Cooper interests include glass-ceramic and ceramic composite materials, inorganic glasses, mechanical properties, kinetics, physics of geological materials: experimental geophysics and experimental petrology. Experimental research determines basic physiochemical data for geological materials and applies the results to fundamental problems of magma genesis, volcanism, and plate motions on Earth and other planets. Active collaborations with planetary and geophysics faculty and with other institutions add interdisciplinary perspectives.
