GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT BROWN UNIVERSITY
GRADUATE PROGRAM & RESEARCH

The graduate program in the Department of Geological Sciences at Brown is rated among the top programs in the nation and the world.

Professor Terry Tullis conducts a tour of his
lab for a group of incoming graduate students.

Our faculty members, nationally and internationally acknowledged leaders in their fields, engage in externally supported research which is defining the direction of inquiry in the next 5-10 years. Five primary research areas lead cutting-edge, nationwide themes: Structure and Dynamics of the Solid Earth; Geological Materials: Properties and Processes; Earth System History and Global Change; Planetary Perspectives; and Environmental Sciences.

The Department is also highly ranked nationally and internationally as a scientific research unit. The 1995 NRC survey had us ranked 12th in the nation in faculty quality; only one other unit of comparable size ranked in the top 12.
