GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT BROWN UNIVERSITY
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

Research Opportunities
The geosciences faculty conduct internationally recognized research at the forefront of their fields. Undergraduate students participate actively in this research through independent research projects or employment involving field work, laboratory experiments, or theoretical computer modeling. Students get meaningful hands-on experience as well as a chance to assess various career options. It is common for student research to be published.

Examples of past and current student research projects:

Analyzing deep sea cores to evaluate past climate changes, including ice ages
Mapping mid-ocean ridges in the South Atlantic from a geophysics research cruise
Computer modeling and visualization of solid state flow in the mantle
Determining earthquake hazards in Providence, RI & northeastern U.S.
Analyzing Mt. Rainier eruption history from a combination of field work and experiments
Using geophysical and geochemical methods to analyse field sites for ground water or stream contamination
Analyzing spectral, photographic and radar data from recent space missions to the Moon, Mars, and Venus
Conducting scaled analog experiments to determine how impact craters are formed on different planets
Analysing sediment composition and ages from coastal marshes in New England to determine paleo hurricane frequency
