The Chemistry Computer Cluster

Ted is a cluster running ROCKS 5.4.3. It is a GigE Altix XE 1300 cluster configuration consisting of

  • a frontend or head node which is an SGI Altix XE 210 unit with Intel(R) Xeon(R) 2.33 GHz dual core processor. It has 4 Gb of memory and a 250 Gb disk drive.

  • There are 11 compute blades each with two compute nodes. Each compute node is an Altixi XE310 with two 2.83 GHz quad core CPUs. The Two of the blades belong to High Energy Theory Group in Physics; eight of the blades belong to a computational theory group in Chemistry; and one blade belongs to the Chemistry department.

  • Each of the 11 compute nodes has from 4 to 16 Gb of memory and 250 Gb of disk space. The system has been software partitioned to allow 8 processors for general Chemistry use, 64 processors for use by the Doll research group, 64 processors for use by the Stratt research group and 32 processors for use by High Energy Theoretical Group in Physics.

  • There is an additional compute blade with four processors. Each processor has six CPUs. This compute node has 9 Gb of /tmp space, 95 Gb of memory and 493 Gb of disk space. The CPUs are Intel Xeon X5650s. This node is for use by the HET group and Jim Doll.

The messaging between nodes is done through gigabit ethernet.

PMI cards are available for each pair of computer CPUs in the cluster.

The RUNACTION indicates what action is performed when the unit is rebooted. "os" indicates that the system will use the OS currently on its disk.

"power" units are power distribution units and cannot be used for computation.
